May 11, 1942 - Dear Audrey
But they take me for granted and hardly even miss me.
Another pass! Only 24 hours so hightail it down to Hartford then hightail it back. She must have dropped him off by the highway. I wonder if they talked about Mother's Day and their future. I wonder if it's mentioned in the Marriage Book. Remember, in 1942 so it's not "if" you'll get pregnant but "when". Women don't' have as many rights or access to birth control but they're sure expected to step up and help win the war. Sorry for the rant. Oops, another typo!

The Boston Globe - May 11, 1942
So much death and destruction. At least we have a new Apple Blossom Queen.

Meanwhile in Hartford
So much fighting. The surrender of an American General to the Japanese is devastating. Locally, this was the last weekend to fill up the car before rationing goes into effect. We can all image the chaos. Another reminder to stock up on coal before it's rationed. War is stupid.

Dear Audrey,
I’ve only been away from this place for 24 hours and it seems funny being here. I miss you just as much as before I came down to see you. I look around at the fellows and it seems as if I haven’t seen them for a long while. But they take me for granted and hardly even miss me.
Once again I had extraordinary good luck “bumming” a ride. You had hardly got out of site and I picked up a ride within 10 miles of Boston and so I was in town by 6:30 and then in Winthrop shortly after 7 o’clock. And that’s good time. I would have a hard time driving up in that time myself. But I think I will allow myself more time next time. That is figuring too close.
I got a letter from you when I got back to camp and so had a pleasant surprise. I also got a letter from a cousin of mine who lives down in Westport, Conn. She said you sent her an announcement and so she wants to send you something. I’ll have to send her your address.
Well, I can’t say much because I just left you. I enjoyed myself over in the park with you this afternoon and we will have to go over there again. We will take some pictures next time. I think we have quite a few things in common. That is besides loving each other so much. It will be safe for me to dream of you and without any danger of any accidents. That book on “Marriage” sounds quite interesting and I’ll to look at it. I’m kind of tired to-nite so my love I’m thru writing.
All my love
Leonard
P.S. maybe I had too many pieces of you today. Do you think so?
