September 1942
On September 1, 1942, the Massachusetts Governor Saltonstall has requested that, as a show of support for the heroes, everyone - no matter where you are - will stop and salute at 9:00PM - SET YOUR CLOCK!
Baby! That’s what happening. Well, one baby. That will be confirmed as this month starts with a pass for the lovebirds. It’s truly surprising it didn’t happen before now. Birth control is not allowed so it was just a matter of time. And no, Douglas MacArthur hasn’t reached out to consult Leonard and discuss war strategy. He does have some crazy times; sneaking into camp over the fence, sneaking into the mess to get a sandwich, sneaking into an empty hotel and taking paper for writing letters. The September 14 letter, Shaw’s Hotel – on the hill is worth a look.
The job Dad has is interesting. Listening on phone lines. Can you imagine Miss Rose Lambrey’s job? I bet she kept her cool and put those “fellows” in their place. Although they did get her address… When he’s not doing in the bunker, Dad is patrolling the beaches, or digging a ditch; all the while knowing he can get shipped out to who knows where at any time. The weather is getting cooler, and they live in barracks made of cardboard essentially.
And the war rages on. Meat rationing is planned and they’re discussing 2 ½ lbs per person per week. There are metal shortages and you’re asked to donate any scrap metal you have. Not to mention cooking grease. Families are still collecting and turning all kinds of cooking fats for the war effort.
There’s already a price freeze on retail prices and now President Roosevelt will announce the “most drastic order affecting the everyday life of Americans” to limit all wages, salaries, and farm prices. The Russians are kicking butt. In 1942, they were our allies. On September 1st, the Governor of Massachusetts asks everyone to stop what they’re doing at 9:00pm, come to attention, and salute. No matter where you are, stop and salute.
