I got a “bang on the squash”...
Writing from the infirmary, he's got a hit on the head that requires a couple of stitches. Sounds like a wonderful break to just rest up. Sounds like they're meeting up tomorrow - so no letters for the next few days. But maybe we could all write to Jean and cheer Dad's sister up? Stupid war has taken all the young men away. Just a reminder, June just graduated and Nancy will be next.

Transcript - July 24, 1942
Bat H - 9th C.A., Fort Ruckman
Dear Audrey:
Now don’t go getting excited. I got a “bang on the squash” and they have me in the infirmary. We were drilling on the guns and something happened. The process is too detailed. But I got hit with a dummy shell and the sharp edge broke open the front of my head. A couple of stitches pulled it together and they are keeping me here for the night. I feel fine and it is a joke making me stay here. I’m the only patient here. I had to borrow this paper and pencil and it is the best I could do and I am writing on a book. It is rather uncomfortable.
I have just wrote a letter to Jean. I am sending you the letter she sent me. What a pitiful letter. The poor kid is very lonesome. If it moves you the way it did me, you’ll write her, eh? She’ll probably be glad to hear from you. They treat me all right so don’t worry. I’ll be out tomorrow and waiting for you. They had to shave my head so I imagine I’ll be quite a specimen. It is getting dark so I’ll call a “halt”. I love my wife and also my best girl. Seeing as how you are both of these you get twice as much love. See how lucky you are.
